Introducing IST's Smart Lockers
IST Management Services worked with Secure Locker Systems at Nova Southeastern University since Fall 2019. NSU utilizes Secure Locker Systems for package delivery to the residential students living in one of the residence halls. Secure Locker Systems have been a great success at NSU, allowing IST Mail Services to serve residents on "student time" and allowing for contact-free delivery during the pandemic. Due to the popularity of the current Secure Locker Systems at the residence hall, IST is now working with NSU to identify other areas of the University where Secure Locker Systems can be utilized.
IST Mail Services
has traditionally operated residence hall mailrooms at Nova Southeastern University from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The biggest advantage we have seen with the Smart Locker system is package pick-up is not limited to traditional hours of operation. With the Secure Locker Systems, tracking data from the system has shown a large number of packages picked up between 8:30 PM and 1:00 AM. The availably of 24 hours, 7 days a week package pick-up for students allows them to pick up packages when convenient to their schedule. This flexibility ultimately increases overall response time, allowing IST Mail Services to get packages into the hands of the students faster than ever.
More Than Just a Locker
Secure Locker Systems has also proved very useful as Nova Southeastern University worked to keep students safe during the pandemic. The locker system maintains the chain of custody, and two-step package pick-up verification means safe and secure package delivery without the need for face-to-face contact.
Today's students rely on mail and shipping services more than ever before for their shopping needs, often favoring services like Amazon over brick and mortar stores. We saw that this trend increased with students ordering everything from groceries to PPE to be delivered to them on campus during the pandemic. The Secure Locker Systems allows student residents to get what they need safely, securely, and at their convenience. As Nova Southeastern University and IST Management look toward the future, we are looking into other areas of the University in which the Secure Locker Systems make sense. In addition to expanded use for resident students, the Secure Locker Systems may also be used for research programs that work primarily nights and after normal business hours.
Secure Locker Systems could also provide increased convenience to faculty and staff that aren't always on campus or may not be in the office when packages are delivered during normal business hours. There has also been discussion on the use of refrigerated lockers for medicine or food deliveries. The combination of IST's attention to process and the Secure Locker Systems versatility makes the system a great option for almost any package delivery setting.
