May is Mental Health Awareness month. It has been observed since 1949 in the United States and was started by Clifford W. Beers, the founder of Mental Health America.
The data concerning mental health is staggering. 19% of adults in our country today have some form of
mental illness which can be anxiety, depression, or more severe conditions of mental disease. More than 50% of adults with a mental illness have not received treatment. This is a big problem. Many of us probably know someone who experiences mental illness in life. This month, we joined many other organizations to shed light on mental illness. Glenn Close, an American actress, once said, “What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation.”
At IST, we have decided to bring this vital topic to the attention of IST employees. We also give employees a chance to win gift card; they just have to submit a photo or written description of them doing things like reaching out to family, communicating with friends and family, exercising, meditation, or whatever they can think of that might improve their mental health.
Let’s all do our part in shining a light on mental illness. While dealing with things like depression and anxiety can be challenging, we need to stay positive and continue developing ways to help our fellow human beings. As somebody once said, “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was ending, he turned into a butterfly.” Thank you for all that you do.
