Supporting Military Spouses: Two Year Update

This month marks two years since IST became part of the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) program through the Department of Defense (DOD)! We call it our GEMS program, which stands for “Gainful Employment for Military Spouses.” This is a noble cause. While the unemployment rate is currently 4.6%, the unemployment rate for military spouses is around 26%. Part of the challenge is that military spouses tend to relocate often, and some companies are reluctant to hire them. The good news is that this is a non-issue for IST. If we hire them and they have to relocate, there is a good chance we can retain them in another IST location because we have operations throughout the U.S.

Finding good people today is a challenge for most employers. The ratio of job openings to hires is at an all-time high. The GEMS program is an excellent recruiting program because it represents a vast talent pool and helps out our service members who may be married.

Sydney Ayers, Vice President of Talent Acquisition, is also helping manage our GEMS program along with Vice President of Operations & Implementations, Tim Richardson, and Vice President of Human Resources Administration, Lori Mitchum. Sydney said, “Historically, we’ve had 21 total participants in GEMS, and we had 6 new GEMS enrollments this year!” This is significant progress.

The GEMS program is ideal for IST because the military spouses are typically motivated, team-oriented, and have a strong work ethic. With our operations throughout the U.S., we think this is a win-win program. I have two sons who served in the Navy, and I consider this the greatest honor of my life. I saw my sons grow in their careers and witnessed the military's impact on their relationships and families. It wasn't always easy, but I have always considered it my duty to do everything to help on the home front. IST's GEMS program is an extension of that duty. I want to help military spouses by giving them flexible, portable, secure careers no matter where military life takes them.

The GEMS program is just one of many initiatives we have at IST to attract talented people. Our goal is to hire and retain employees with a servant's heart attitude. A willingness to serve is a significant plus in delivering quality service to our clients. Albert Einstein once said, "Only a life lived in the service to others is worth living." That's what it's all about. Thank you for all that you do.

Each February, in celebration of Valentine's Day, I like to reflect on our customer service, which focuses on IST's mission to build lasting partnerships. Our industry often defines us by metrics, KPIs, and deliverables. While these are essential to our success, they are merely the framework. The soul, the essence, lies in how we serve – with heart.
